Alaska ranks number 44th in the nation with the number of National Board Certified teachers(NBCTs) within the state. This includes the number of teachers who have renewed their certification through the maintenance of certification process and those who have successfully completed the NB Certification initial process.

Some of the highest districts within Alaska in the NBPTS Network include: 

  1. Anchorage 
  2. Fairbanks North Star Borough 
  3. Matanuska- Sustina Borough 
  4. Juneau School
  5. Sitka 

 

What are the benefits of being an NBCT in AK?

Alaska NBCT Financial Incentives                 

Many districts within Alaska provide stipends to NBCTs. Anchorage, Fairbanks North Star Borough, Juneau, and Matanuska-Susitna have local school district agreements that include NBCT stipends. Be sure to check with your local Alaska school district to find out specific details on these stipends and if they are available.

State Recognition    

Alaska is one of the states that recognizes the National Board Certification. Teachers who hold a professional license and have achieved National Board Certification may be eligible for a Master certificate. This certificate is valid for 10 years and may be renewed as long as you hold a current National Board Certification and meet other renewal requirements.                    

Educational Credits               

Many universities provide graduate credit to teachers pursuing National Board Certification. Check with your local Alaska university to see if graduate credit is a possibility. One of these colleges includes the University of Alaska at Anchorage. The Master of Education in Teaching and Learning is available for educators seeking National Board Certification. The coursework can be tailored to support specific areas of certification. Up to nine hours of approved graduate credit may be applied to the master’s degree for those who have already completed National Board Certification. NBPTS Support Options

NBPTS support offerings may or may not be available in your area, depending on what part of Alaska you are located. NBPTS MOC candidates going through renewal are encouraged to join a local cohort if available, however you also have the option to join Renew Like a Pro for teachers going through the NB MOC process across the country. For those teachers in Alaska wanting support with the initial NBPTS certification, you are encouraged to join the Professional Development course for Creating your Component 3 Portfolio: Teaching and Learning in the Classroom or Creating your Component 4 Portfolio: Assessment Drives Instruction course These Professional Development courses are available with asynchronous components and optional synchronous group sessions.
