California NBCT Financial Incentives
The National Board of Professional Teaching Standards Certification Incentive Program went into effect on July 1st, 2021. This program will award grants to National Board Certified Teachers and National Board candidates going through the process. Learn more here.
This program will award grants of up to $25,000 to any teacher who has attained certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, as long as the teacher agrees to teach at a high-priority school for at least five years. It will also award grants of $2,500 to any teacher who initiates the process of pursuing National Board certification when teaching at a high-priority school.
State Recognition
California is one of the states that recognizes National Board Certification. This certification can be used to clear a preliminary credential as well as to add a credential in a new subject area.
Educational Credits
A number of higher education universities in California offer credit hours and support National Board Certification for California teachers. A list of these institutions can be found and is available on the California Department of Education website.
NBPTS Support Options
There are many opportunities for teachers to get support with the National Board Certification Process in California. A number of districts offer support within their districts, however a number of candidates are opting for a different avenue. Tracey Bryant Stuckey offers one of these alternatives, which is an online Cohort and Professional Development program that is reverse-engineered and provides step-by-step walk-through of how to complete your portfolio. Initial candidates can work through Component 3 and Component 4, while Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Candidates work through the Renew Like a Pro program.
