What are the benefits of being an NBCT in IA?

Iowa NBCT Financial Incentives

National Board Certified Teachers in Iowa (those eligible) receive an annual bonus of $2,500 for the life of the certificate. These funds come from appropriation by the Iowa state legislature. However, if the number of NBCTs exceeds available funding from the state, the bonus will be prorated by the Iowa Department of Education.

State Recognition

Iowa is one of the states that recognizes and accepts National Board Certification as fulfilling the renewal requirements for either the standard or Master Educator License. Teachers must simply submit their certificate to the Board of Educational Examiners for approval. Educators that are relocating to Iowa and have an out-of-state license, but hold a valid National Board certificate are eligible to obtain an Iowa teaching license with the equivalent endorsement.

Educational Credits

Check with your local Iowa university to see if graduate credit is available for National Board Certification. Several universities such as Graceland University offers a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, designed to promote the professional development of practicing teachers. Program topics, learning experiences, and outcomes are based on the National Board's Five Core Propositions. For more information on Graceland University, visit the university's website. St. Ambrose University also offers a Master of Education in Teaching program, a standards-based curriculum that focuses on professional teaching outcomes as identified by the National Board, so be sure to check out the university's website.
