Kansas is number 35 in the nation for number of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs). This rank includes NB MOC Candidates for renewal and those who have certified for the first time through the initial NBPTS certification.

What are the benefits of being an NBCT in KS?

Kansas NBCT Financial Incentives                 

National Board Certified Teachers in Kansas who are employed by a Kansas school district are eligible to receive an annual bonus of $1,000. These bonuses are paid by the individual school districts for the life of the certification. Be sure to visit the Kansas Department of Education Website for the most current information.

A number of local Kansas school districts have secured agreements from school districts and other professional organizations for additional incentives for National Board Certification including Blue Valley, Emporia, Manhattan-Ogen, Wichita, and Geary County.

Additionally, Topeka Public Schools now have a $2,500 addendum for NBCTs, in addition to $1,000 from the Kansas State Department of Education.

State Recognition    

Kansas is one of the states recognizing National Board Certification and this certification. In fact teachers who hold a valid National Board Certification and Kansas professional teaching license are eligible for a 10-year accomplished license. 

Kansas also recognizes National Board Certification as fulfilling one license renewal; additional license renewals can be granted for achieving recertification.                        

Educational Credits               

Some universities in Kansas provide graduate credit for teaches pursuing National Board Certification. Be sure to check your local Kansas university to see if this is an option for you. In addition, Emporia University offers a Curriculum and Instruction Masters Degree for K-12 teachers who are interested in pursuing National Board Certification. Regardless of whether support is offered in your local Kansas district, it is important to work together with others during this process to help you grow and clarify questions and collaborate along the way. Depending on what part of Kansas you are located in, you may or may not have local support options for National Board.
