Michigan ranks number 34th in the nation of National Board Certified teachers (NBCTs) within the state. This number includes teachers who have initially certified and those who have been through the maintenance of certification processs.

Michigan NBCT Financial Incentives
Many districts within Michigan recognize National Board Certification provide stipends to NBCTs and monetary support. These are recognized through local contract agreements and these include districts Kalamazoo, Lansing, Novi, Plainwell, Rochester Community Schools, West Bloomfield, and Whitmore Lake. Be sure to check with your local district for specifics.
State Recognition
Michigan is one of the states that recognizes National Board Certification as fulfilling the certification requirements for renewal. Teachers who complete the NBPTS process will receive 90 State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs). Upon NBPTS certification, Michigan teachers will receive an additional 90 hours. NBCTs who successfully renew certification through the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Process will also early 180 SCECHs. Another benefit is that teachers who hold a valid National Board certificate may be eligible for Michigan's Advance Professional Education certificate, which if valid for five years, provided that the teacher has received five consecutive effective ratings on annual evaluations in the 5 most recent years.
Educational Credits
Some universities provide graduate credit to teachers pursuing National Board Certification. Be sure to check with your Michigan university to see if graduate credit is a possibility.
NBPTS Support Options
NBPTS support offerings are available in many areas, but may not be immediately available in your geographic area of Michigan. NBPTS MOC candidates going through renewal are encouraged to work with others for collaboration by joining a local cohort if available, however teachers also have the option to join Renew Like a Pro. This Professional Development opportunity is for those completing NB MOC process across the country. For those teachers in Michigan wanting support with the initial NBPTS certification have the opportunity to join Tracey Bryant Stuckey's Professional Development course for Creating your Component 3 Portfolio: Teaching and Learning in the Classroom or Creating your Component 4 Portfolio: Assessment Drives Instruction course. These Professional Development courses are available with asynchronous components and optional synchronous group sessions.
