What are the benefits of being an NBCT in OH?
Ohio NBCT Financial Incentives
As of right now according to the Ohio Department of Education's website, the State of Ohio's biennium budget no longer provides funding for stipends for teachers who are Nationally Board Certified. The National Board is encouraging teachers to partner with them to become an NBPTS advocate in Ohio to receive the financial awards and stipends that teachers deserve.
State Recognition
Ohio is one of the states that recognizes NBPTS certification as a pathway to the Lead Professional Educator License. Ohio teachers to hold a valid certification from the NB are recognized as having demonstrated effective practice at the distinguished level of performance. This requirement is defined in the Ohio Standards for Teaching Profession.
Educational Credits
Many colleges and universities all over the US offer graduate credit to teachers pursing National Board Certification. Make sure to check with your local Ohio university to see if this is available for you.
NBPTS Support Options
Ohio may or may not have local supports for NBPTS in your immediate area. Regardless of your geographic location within the state, it is vital to find a mentor or cohort to support you through your NBPTS Certification or MOC journey. Candidate Support Providers (CSPs) such as Tracey Bryant Stuckey offer support to teachers located in Ohio and nationally. These programs include:
- Component 3 (for Initial Certification)
- Component 4 (for Initial Certification)
- Renew Like a Pro (For Renewal- MOC Candidates)
These PD experiences will result in a finished portfolio that will be ready to submit to the NBPTS when the portal opens. The programs are designed to be completed in 12 weeks and are delivered through both asynchronous lessons, with the option to add on live synchronous group coaching. These settings are ideal for collaboration with other teachers around the US.
